π Technician POV: Would We Buy an iPhone 12 Mini in Cheras Today?
π Technician POV: Would We Buy an iPhone 12 Mini in Cheras Today?
The iPhone 12 Mini was one of Apple's most interesting iPhones.
Small body.
Flagship processor.
OLED display.
Face ID.
5G.
And the full iPhone experience in a phone that could actually fit comfortably in one hand.
But it's 2026 now.
So if someone offered you a cheap iPhone 12 Mini in Cheras...
Would a technician buy it?
Yes — but we'd check one thing very carefully.
π The Battery.
π± The iPhone 12 Mini's Biggest Problem Isn't Its Performance
The A14 Bionic is still capable for everyday use.
The cameras are still good.
The OLED display still looks great.
The size is still something many people love.
The problem is the battery.
The iPhone 12 Mini has a physically small battery because of its compact design.
And in 2026, every original iPhone 12 Mini is now several years old.
Apple states that rechargeable batteries naturally lose capacity over time, and iPhone 14 and earlier batteries are designed to retain 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions.
So when buying one used, battery condition matters a lot.
π What Would We Check?
Go to:
Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging
Then check Maximum Capacity.
But don't stop there.
Use the phone for a while.
Look for:
- Rapid battery drain
- Excessive heat
- Unexpected shutdowns
- Battery percentage dropping quickly
- Poor screen-on time
A phone showing 85% battery health may behave very differently from another phone showing 85%, depending on usage and battery condition.
π± The Small Size Is Both Its Best Feature and Its Weakness
This is why the 12 Mini is so interesting.
Pros:
β
Easy to hold
β
Easy to use one-handed
β
Fits small pockets
β
Flagship performance
β
OLED display
β
Excellent camera system
But:
Cons:
β Small battery
β Smaller display
β Older hardware in 2026
β Battery replacement may become necessary
If you're a heavy user, the battery limitation can become frustrating.
If you're a light user who loves compact phones?
The 12 Mini can still make a lot of sense.
π Check the Display
The OLED display should be tested carefully.
Look for:
- Green tint
- Dead pixels
- Burn-in
- Touch issues
- Brightness problems
- Cracks
Also check True Tone and overall touch response.
If the phone has already had a display replacement, ask what type of replacement was used and why the screen was changed.
πΈ Test the Cameras
Don't assume an iPhone camera is automatically perfect.
Test:
- Main camera
- Ultra-wide
- Front camera
- Autofocus
- Video
- Stabilisation
Make sure the camera focuses properly and doesn't shake or produce strange noises.
π Face ID Is Another Must-Check
Set up Face ID.
Don't simply check whether the front camera works.
If Face ID cannot be configured or doesn't work correctly, investigate before buying.
π Check the Lightning Port
The iPhone 12 Mini uses Lightning.
Check whether the port:
- Charges consistently
- Holds the cable properly
- Supports fast charging where appropriate
- Has excessive dirt or damage
A charging problem is something you don't want to discover after buying.
π§Ύ Ask About Previous Repairs
This is especially important with an older iPhone.
Ask:
Screen replaced?
Battery replaced?
Camera repaired?
Charging port repaired?
Water damage?
Motherboard repair?
A repair history isn't automatically a deal breaker.
But the more you know about the phone's history, the easier it is to judge whether the price makes sense.
π° So, Would We Buy One?
Yes.
But we'd buy the condition, not just the model.
A healthy iPhone 12 Mini with a good battery, working Face ID, clean display and no major repair history?
Still interesting in 2026.
A cheap 12 Mini with a dying battery, damaged screen and unknown repair history?
Not worth the gamble.
Remember:
The cheapest iPhone 12 Mini isn't necessarily the best iPhone 12 Mini.
