Technician POV: Would We Buy a Used Foldable Phone in Cheras?
Technician POV: Would We Buy a Used Foldable Phone in Cheras?
Foldable phones look amazing.
A phone that opens into a mini tablet? A compact phone that folds in half? It's one of the most interesting designs in modern smartphones.
But here's the question most buyers don't ask:
Would a technician actually buy one used?
Our answer?
We'd be very careful.
That doesn't mean every foldable phone is unreliable. Modern foldables have improved significantly, and current generations are becoming more durable. But compared with a traditional smartphone, a foldable simply has more components and more moving parts that can potentially fail.
π§ 1. The Hinge Is the First Thing We'd Check
A normal smartphone doesn't have a mechanical hinge.
A foldable does.
When buying used, open and close the phone several times.
Listen carefully.
Watch for:
- Clicking sounds
- Grinding sounds
- Stiff movement
- Uneven opening
- Hinge resistance changing
- The phone no longer opening completely flat
Dust and debris can also become a problem around some foldable hinge designs. Recent testing of Samsung's 2026 Z Fold 8, for example, found that dust exposure could cause grinding noises and opening problems.
Technician tip:
A strange hinge sound isn't something we'd ignore just because the phone still works.
π± 2. The Inner Screen Is the Big One
This is where buying a used foldable gets interesting.
Traditional phones have rigid glass displays.
Foldables use flexible display technology designed to bend repeatedly.
That means you need to inspect the inner display carefully.
Look for:
- Lines around the crease
- Black spots
- Flickering
- Dead pixels
- Touch problems
- Uneven brightness
- Display separation
- A screen protector that is peeling
A used foldable can look perfect when closed but reveal problems when opened.
π 3. Check the Crease
Yes, the crease is normal.
But there's a difference between:
"I can see the crease."
and
"The crease is becoming damaged."
Look for:
- Cracks
- Deepening crease
- Bubbles
- Separation
- Unusual lines
If the crease area starts developing display problems, don't ignore it.
πΈ 4. The Repair Bill Changes the Equation
This is probably the biggest reason we'd hesitate.
A foldable isn't simply:
"Normal phone + folding hinge."
Its internal display, hinge-related components and construction are more complicated.
Used Galaxy Fold/Flip buyers are specifically advised to inspect the hinge, inner display, crease and factory screen protector because these are additional failure points that traditional phones don't have.
Some repair specialists also report that foldable repairs can involve separate paths for hinge-related flex problems versus inner-display replacement.
So that RM2,000 used foldable may not be equivalent to buying a RM2,000 conventional smartphone.
π 5. Don't Forget Battery Age
A used foldable isn't immune to normal battery ageing.
If the phone has already been used for years, check:
- Battery drain
- Heating
- Charging speed
- Unexpected shutdowns
- Battery percentage behaviour
Battery degradation is normal for rechargeable batteries, so the age and usage history matter.
π§ 6. Don't Assume Water Resistance Makes It Invincible
Some modern foldables have water-resistance ratings.
But water resistance isn't the same as being waterproof forever.
If a used phone has been dropped, repaired or opened previously, don't assume its original protection is still perfect.
π€ So... Would a Technician Buy One?
New? Yes.
Used? Depends heavily on the condition.
We wouldn't automatically reject a used foldable.
But we'd inspect it much more carefully than a normal smartphone.
Our checklist would be:
β
Hinge
β
Inner display
β
Outer display
β
Crease
β
Touchscreen
β
Cameras
β
Charging
β
Battery
β
Previous repair history
If all of those pass and the price is attractive?
Then maybe.
But if the seller says:
"Everything okay, just the hinge sometimes makes sound."
That's when we'd probably walk away.
